Exclusive: What Southerners won’t eat a breakfast sandwich without? Jelly.

Updated: Jun 11, 2022

This week we have an exclusive first look at a piece by Nneka M. Okona, an author and journalist whose work I adore. This piece is part of an ongoing guest creator series, where diverse writers and creators are paid (with an emphasis on fairly and promptly, which your membership makes possible!) to help create a little magic for us. For written pieces like this one they are exclusive to the community for the first two weeks, then shared publicly so that the writers can also have a public-facing version of the piece for their portfolios.

Also find below part two of this month's Conversations with Anela & KJ, where we delve into the positionality of my work in the travel space and more. Last week's episode was so long that we split it into two parts for easier consumption.

I would love to hear/see more about "second-tier" travel locations. To be honest, I gravitate toward the 'best of' lists because I can usually count on a diverse population. When you start talking about other lesser visited cities that I don't know much about, I get concerned as to whether or not I'm going to feel safe/welcomed. I can always do a deep dive once a city is mentioned - it's bringing these alternatives to our attention that would be super cool!

Hi Andrea! I won't touch too much on less popular destinations here as while I love the topic, this is still a food-centric community so this might not be the space for me to expand too much on it.

But I will say that there are diverse communities everywhere, even in smaller cities or less popular destinations. I also think it's important to differentiate between being the only one and not being safe or welcomed when in a space that's not as diverse. I think some travelers are not comfortable being the "only one in the room" which is perfectly valid, but doesn't necessarily correlate to how safe or welcoming a place is.

For example, in major European destinations like…

What a beautiful piece! I could taste the jelly that joins my breakfast sandwich and feel the sweet and savory combo. Didn't realize that people thought this was strange!

Jelly on my breakfast sandwiches has been a go-to for me since I had it in Texas at a conference for the first time over 10 years ago. That perfect sweetness and sometimes the fact the jelly is colder added another dimension to any sandwich. This article was so well written, and it made me smile.

you're so right about the temperature difference, for me that's an added bonus as it adds some more interesting mouthfeel. So glad you liked this one!
