March 2022 Episode: Conversations With Anela & KJ

Updated: Sep 5, 2023

I'm in my final week in Iraq, in full family mode soaking it all in. My brain is exhausted from speaking and listening to this much Arabic, which requires a level of concentration not needed in my mother tongue. We leave in just a couple of days to make the long trek back to the United States.

Back to our kitties, back to work, back to the comforts of home. As I settle back in I'll be passing off a mountain of content to my editor to work through. You'll get that as a Magic at the Margins member soon, with a full vlog of our time in Iraq and more on our experiences there.

For now, since my brain needs a break, I'm sharing this month's episode of Conversations with Anela & KJ. In it, we talk parasocial relationships, dealing with trolls in our DMs, journalists as influencers, potato milk, and more!

Take care,

Anela

Did you catch the family recipe I shared last week? This Meklheme, an Iraqi egg and tomato dish, is filling and delicious.

On Upcoming In-Person Events:

Thank you all for completing the survey to help us plan for upcoming events! It seems the distribution of folks is largely between DC, NW Arkansas, and then NY, Chicago, LA, and Raleigh/Durham have smaller populations. I should be in DC in May for work, for a photoshoot for the recipes for the book! I'll likely host 2-3 events then so we can maximize that time.

In addition, I'm looking into space and places to host something in NW Arkansas! Be on the lookout for that. Those might be smaller or could potentially be a large meetup co-hosted by KJ of Black Food Fridays. We are still working out the details but I'll get that information to you all as soon as possible. In the fall I'll be looking to some of the smaller/auxiliary cities with members to host events as well.

For the upcoming book talk and cooking class with Cheryl Day: Please honor your registration if you sign up as we have folks on the waitlist! In general for events as they do fill up and sometimes there is a participant limit, if you cannot make it and you're registered, go to the members tab on the website and you'll have the option to manage event registration there.
